How Choose and Book works

When you and your GP agree that you need to see a specialist, Choose and Book will show your GP which hospitals or clinics are available for your treatment. Your GP will discuss with you the appropriate options for your medical condition.

Your GP will then give you an appointment request letter. This includes your appointment reference number and the list of hospitals and clinics you can choose from, and explains how to book your appointment. Your GP will also give you a password to help keep your personal information secure.

You can then book an appointment at the hospital or clinic of your choice.

Since April 1, 2008 the number of hospitals or clinics you can choose from has increased. You can choose to go to any hospital where your care is funded by the NHS - anywhere in England. This includes NHS hospitals and many private hospitals. You can get more information from the main NHS website, your local primary care trust (PCT) or GP, or your local library.
