The BBC showed a new baby with its mother at St Mary’s Hospital the day it was born as part of a story about how for the first time in almost half a century, the population is being driven up by new babies rather than immigration.

The weekly magazine reported on the Trust’s appointment of two senior managers from strategic health authorities. The article included a brief biography and quotes from NHS South West director of finance and performance Bill Shields who has been named the Trust’s new chief financial officer. It also detailed the background of Kevin Jarrold, the Trust’s new chief information officer who joins us from NHS London.

The conference discussed developments in the treatment of different types of cancers.

New surgery centre opens in Paddington
This feature showcases the new Imperial Surgical Innovation Centre (ISIC) at St Mary’s Hospital.
The reporter tested her surgical skills using a virtual reality simulator for ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgical training in the skills laboratory of the Centre.
She also visited the outpatient area which opened in May.
Clinical programme group director Justin Vale and ENT surgeon Asit Arora were interviewed for the piece.

Consultant opthalmic surgeon Ali Mearza was quoted in a feature about sunbathing safely.
Ali said: “People underestimate how harmful the sun can be to our eyes. Exposure to the sun’s rays can damage the retina. In some cases it can even lead to sight loss. It’s vital to protect your eyes from ultraviolet light rays with sun glasses with a 99 to 100 percent UV filter – always ensure your glasses are CE marked. To avoid the risk of cancer apply sun screen to the eye area.”

Mass jabs for babies to check TB surge
Trust consultant in respiratory medicine Dr Onn Min Kon was quoted in this story about an engagement process which will take place on measures to combat the spread of tuberculosis in London.
One of the proposals is to vaccinate all babies against the virus at birth.
