Supervision of midwives

At Imperial, all of our midwives aim to support you throughout your pregnancy and labour, and as a new parent. Our midwives are trained professionals who maintain their skills and knowledge in keeping with local and national requirements.

If you require additional support or information, such as discussing an issue about your care or birth plan, the Supervisors of Midwives team are available to help.

A Supervisor of Midwives can:

  • Give guidance and support to you and your midwife
  • Ensure your care is appropriate
  • Help midwives develop their practice

Who are Supervisors of Midwives?
Supervisors of Midwives are experienced midwives who, in addition to their contracted role, have undertaken specific education to support and supervise midwives. At Imperial, our Supervisors of Midwives aim to be approachable and supportive; our primary focus is the safety of our mothers, babies and midwives. We believe that childbirth is both a normal and life affirming event for women, and we support the role of the midwife in facilitating this.

A Supervisor of Midwives can support you by:

  • Listening and talking to you about your birth experience
  • Developing a safe care plan with your midwife and obstetrician
  • Facilitating good communication with the interprofessional team
  • Discussing concerns about your care
  • Acting as an advocate for safe practice
  • Responding to your complaint
  • Promoting safe practice and investigating poor practice
  • Providing advice about contacting the LSA and NMC

What is Supervision of Midwifery?
Please refer to the NMC practical guide for midwifes for detailed information about the role of the Supervisor of Midwives and the NMC support for parents document.
