St Mary's Hospital

The maternity unit at St Mary’s provides high quality care for women and babies by cohesive teams of midwives, obstetricians and neonatologists.

It also provides tertiary referral services for women with medical complications particularly endocrinology, neurology, cardiac and other medical disorders. The hospital also provides care for women with high risk pregnancies like previous preterm deliveries, multiple pregnancies and women with HIV and substance misuse. The recurrent miscarriage clinic and the antenatal service it provides is world renowned.

The fetal medicine unit is also a tertiary referral centre offering prenatal screening and diagnosis and complex fetal ultrasounds.

Women with antenatally diagnosed fetal surgical problems are also cared for and delivered at St Mary’s. This provides the continuum of pregnancy to the birth process and surgical repair for the baby in the unit which is also a world renowned tertiary paediatric centre.

The labour ward features individual birthing rooms, a birthing pool, a high dependency area and two operating theatres. The St Mary’s birth centre opened in June 2008 and provides a modern hotel-like facility for women with uncomplicated pregnancies. Women are seen there from 36 weeks for birth preparation and antenatal care. After birth, women and their partners are able to stay for up to 24 hours.

Caseload midwifery is available for vulnerable and disadvantaged women within two geographical areas. Two midwives working in partnership provide continuity of care throughout pregnancy, birth and afterwards. Home birth is available as an option and one group won the All Party Parliamentary award for promoting normal birth.

Antenatal education is available in parent education classes. Peer supporters for breastfeeding are available on the postnatal ward and women are welcome at the breastfeeding clinic after they have gone home.

Babies who are born prematurely or develop problems in their first days of life are cared for in our Winnicott baby unit (neonatal intensive care).
