Our performance

The Imperial weight centre at Charing Cross Hospital is recognised as an international centre of excellence (ICE) for bariatric surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), which assesses the safety and quality of bariatric centres across the world. We are one of only two such centres in the UK.

The SRC created the ICE programme to ensure that the safest, highest-quality care is delivered to bariatric surgery patients, regardless of where they elect to have their procedure performed. The ICE programme establishes guidelines and criteria for evaluating bariatric surgical practices around the world and employs a systematic approach to ensure these standards are upheld. The facilities and surgical processes at the Imperial weight centre were closely examined for compliance with the stringent ICE requirements and underwent a thorough site inspection.

In April 2008 our service was declared a preferred provider for bariatric surgery by the South East Coast Specialised Commissioning Group, who have identified the best hospitals to carry out this surgery in London and the south and east of England.

Our current duration of hospital stays are same-day discharge or overnight stay for gastric band surgery and a two-night stay for gastric bypass surgery and sleeve gastrectomies.
