The information about hip and knee replacement on this website currently applies to Charing Cross Hospital only - information for St Mary's Hospital will be added shortly.
The orthopaedics department at Charing Cross Hospital is highly renowned for hip and knee replacement surgery. We perform more hip and knee replacements within the London M25 area than any other single NHS hospital trust.
We have made important advances in the following areas:
• Precise positioning of surgical implants
• The use of partial knee and hip replacements to conserve the existing bone
• Defining patterns of human bony anatomy
• Safety testing of new joint replacements
• Measurement of human musculoskeletal function
We also carry out first-class research into hip and knee replacement, particularly in the application of new technologies to achieve optimal function of artificial knee and hip replacements in our patients with arthritis. Our research is highly interdisciplinary, involving collaboration between surgeons and scientists from rheumatology, engineering, robotics, material science, radiology and immunology.
