Lipidology

The lipid and cardiovascular risk clinic at Hammersmith Hospital is the sole cardiovascular risk prevention service encompassing metabolic as well as cardiovascular risk factors for  Hammersmith, Ealing and Charing Cross hospitals.

As one of the first lipid clinics to be set up in the UK, the department provides specialist lipidology and cardiovascular risk-factor management for outpatients and inpatient management of patients at cardiovascular risk and patients admitted with acute pancreatitis secondary to hypertriglyceridaemia.

It also provides a consultation service for inpatients, patients in primary care, an acute referral service for hospitals within and outside the Trust and a specialised lipoprotein apheresis service for high risk patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia. It is the only provider of this treatment in London and most of the south-east of England.

Patients referred to the lipid clinic are:

  • Patients who are intolerant of first-line lipid-lowering treatment
  • Patients who do not achieve target lipid levels with first-line lipid-lowering treatment
  • Patients with inherited disorders of lipid metabolism, including familial hypercholesterolaemia and familial combined hyperlipidaemia
  • Relatives of patients with inherited lipid disorders who may require genetic screening
  • Patients for whom it is uncertain whether lipid-lowering therapy is indicated
  • Patients who may require lipoprotein apheresis
  • Children with familial hypercholesterolaemia
