Liaison psychiatry

Our liaison psychiatry service provides psychological support to patients with a physical health problem. We accept referrals from a patient’s medical team as well as proactively engaging with teams and wards to identify any support needs. We carry out a consultation with the patient and provide feedback and advice to their medical team. The service is available for outpatients, inpatients and patients attending A&E.

The importance of psychological factors is increasingly recognised at many stages on the patient journey and our liaison psychiatry team has significant expertise in both managing and advising other medical teams on the management of often complex clinical problems.

We are based within the hospital to enable a quicker and more responsive service, which in turn helps ensure patients are discharged in good time.

The service is available from 09.00 to 17.00, Monday to Friday.

We also provide regular training, education and support for all Trust staff to improve awareness of and confidence in dealing with mental health issues and referrals pathways.
