Hammersmith Hospital’s emergency unit provides a coordinated service for the assessment, reception, referral and discharge of patients with acute illnesses, minor injuries and illnesses. The department sees about 30,000 patients a year.
The department is divided into three areas:
There is no provision for the treatment of paediatric patients or major trauma patients within the unit.
Any self-referring paediatric patients will be directed to the nearest paediatric unit after triage. Any paediatric patient in need of urgent care will be assessed, stabilised by a paediatrician from either the ambulatory care unit or neonatal unit and transferred by London Ambulance Service (LAS).
(Please see ambulatory paediatrics for more details).
Any self-referring major trauma patients will be assessed and transferred by LAS.
