Clinical haematology

All levels of care are provided at Hammersmith Hospital with three inpatient wards, a daycare unit and a dedicated outpatient department. We see more than 700 new patients and conduct 14,000 follow up appointments each year. The adult clinical haematology service manages patients with malignant and non-malignant haematological disorders emanating not only from the local population, but also from across the UK and internationally.

The adult service broadly divides into three disease areas:

  • Malignant haematology:  including all forms of leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma, myelodysplasia and myeloproliferative diseases. We are a national and international referral centre for chronic myeloid leukaemia and have international standing in myeloma and myeloproliferative diseases.
The department has a world-renowned stem cell transplant unit, specialising in allogenetic and autologous stem-cell transplantation for chronic and acute leukaemia, myeloma, lymphomas and solid tumours. We were one of the first hospitals in Europe to perform allo-SCT and maintain an excellent reputation in this technology
  • Haemostasis and thrombosis: including all inherited and acquired disorders of bleeding and clotting.
  • Red cell diseases: including all forms of anaemia, congenital, nutritional, haemolytic. We have a large and complex haemoglobinopathy service and provide a seamless transition for paediatric patients to adult service.
