Hammersmith Hospital is a national reference centre for pulmonary arteriovenous malformations and, with cardiology, for pulmonary hypertension.

The respiratory medicine department based at Hammersmith Hospital provides the following specialist services:

  • Difficult asthma clinic
  • Complex airways disease
  • Tuberculosis
  • Interstitial lung disease (ILD) including sarcoidosis
  • Pulmonary vasculitis
  • Respiratory complications of immunosuppression
  • HHTIC London (pulmonary arteriovenous malformations and hereditary haemorrhagic telangectasia - HHT)
  • Close links with the National Pulmonary Hypertension Unit (Dr Howard) and cardiothoracic surgery
  • Pulmonary embolism clinic 

Diagnostic and support services include:

  • Respiratory specialist nurses
  • Lung function testing
  • Bronchoscopy and TBNA
  • Cardiopulmonary exercise testing
  • Skin tests for airborne allergens
  • Fitness to fly assessment
  • Screening for complications of HHT
  • In association with interventional radiology we provide an internationally recognized service in bronchial embolisation for patients with massive haemoptysis
