Here you can find information about the cardiothoracic surgery services we offer at Imperial. All cardiothoracic surgery is now centralised on the Hammersmith Hospital site of the Trust, co-located with interventional cardiology and the renal centre.
The tertiary cardiac surgical unit is a pioneering centre offering the full range of adult cardiothoracic operations as well as highly complex and specialised procedures. It is headed by Mr Jon Anderson, consultant cardiothoracic surgeon, who is chief of service.
The Trust is a centre of excellence, with impressive survival rates and strong links to Imperial College London, the Medical Research Council and the British Heart Foundation and we have now been joined by the world-renowned expert in cardiac surgery, Professor Gianni Angelini.
Hammersmith Hospital is one of five centres in the UK to be awarded the recognition of good practice by the European Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Institute of Accreditation. We also offer complex cardiac surgery to patients with end-stage renal disease due to our co-location with the Imperial Renal and Transplant Centre.
Cardiac surgery in the UK began here at the Hammersmith in the mid-1950s, the first heart-lung bypass machine having been invented, made and used successfully here on site. The unit has always had a considerable reputation for the quality of its clinical work and for its research and teaching programmes. The first professorial chair in cardiac surgery in England was established by the British Heart Foundation in 1983, as was the first chair in clinical perfusion science in more recent years, and the unit continues to provide an atmosphere that encourages research, education and training.
The centre achieves international standards for mitral valve repair, surgical ablation for atrial fibrillation, minimally invasive surgery for aortic and mitral valves, off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery and total arterial revascularisation.
Now that the cardiac surgery unit from St Mary’s has joined with the unit at Hammersmith Hospital, our aim is to perform over 1,000 cardiac operations per year. We are also a major thoracic surgery centre, providing an innovative, highly specialised and technologically advanced thoracic service with an integrated, patient-focussed approach to care, including extensive pre-operative assessment and post-operative rehabilitation advice. We specialise in surgery for patients suffering from lung cancer and other major respiratory disease.
Our custom-built cardiac intensive care and high-dependency unit is a 16-bedded facility for patients undergoing cardiac and thoracic procedures.
