Cardiology

The cardiology team at Hammersmith Hospital provides an internationally renowned specialist service including invasive tertiary cardiology and cardiothoracic services for the west London area. It is a 24/7 heart attack angioplasty centre and offers specialist expertise in the emergency treatment of patients with acute coronary syndromes.

The department offers nationally envied success rates for a range of procedures with outcomes for coronary angioplasty and stenting rivaling those of the major North American centres. We are at the cutting-edge of cardiac intervention including percutaneous heart valve treatments and new forms of cardiac imaging.

The co-location of cardiology with the West London Renal and Transplant Centre has enabled a dedicated cardiac assessment and treatment for patients with end-stage kidney disease, in whom cardiac disease is common. This includes a dedicated cardiorenal clinic. Our cardiologists also work with the obstetric team to achieve successful outcomes for pregnancies in mothers with cardiac disease.

Within the cardiac investigation department there is a dedicated cardiac pacemaker and ICD clinic facility shared with the rapid access chest pain clinic. A full range of non-invasive electrocardiographic and associate services are also provided. The directorate provides a specialist service to adults with primary pulmonary hypertension.  

Cardiac rehabilitation services
If you are recovering from a heart attack or have been diagnosed with a heart problem, your healthcare team might suggest you join a cardiac rehabilitation programme. This a medically supervised programme of exercise, emotional support, diet and exercise that can help improve your healthy and quality of life, and reduce anxiety and depression.
