Laryngectomy: rehabilitation and surgical voice restoration course
Details
In an effort to provide greater access to training in voice restoration surgery through laryngectomy, consultant ENT surgeons collaborate with the Imperial College London school of professional development to facilitate a five-day course focusing on swallowing and communication rehabilitation together with related post-operative rehabilitation needs.
Held at the South Kensington campus of Imperial College London, course participants are exposed to the advanced skills required to assess, diagnose, treat, manage and support patients who have undergone laryngectomy - with or without extensive surgical reconstruction - due to cancer of the larynx and related sites, and who need to achieve optimal outcomes.
This course enables participants to:
• Develop their knowledge of cancer of the larynx, including its presentation, assessment diagnosis, treatment options and management
• Develop the knowledge and advanced clinical skills involved in managing swallowing and voice rehabilitation after total laryngectomy, with particular reference to surgical voice restoration
• Explore the current evidence base for surgical voice restoration and encourage future study in this field
This superb learning opportunity is made possible through the course faculty Mr Peter Clarke (consultant ENT / head and neck surgeon), Mr Alasdair Mace (consultant ENT / head and neck surgeon), Margaret Coffey (research speech and language therapist) and other faculty from outside the academic health science centre.
