Annual joint injection workshop and regular myositis meetings

Details
Many soft tissue injuries and types of arthritis can be extremely disabling but do respond promptly to accurately targeted injections if they are administered with expertise. Imperial College Healthcare’s specialist services clinical programme holds annual joint injection workshops to provide doctors with the necessary technical competence to achieve this success.

Held at Imperial College Healthcare’s Charing Cross Hospital, this learning intervention combines lectures and practical sessions with simulated joint models. The workshop’s content includes theory, pathophysiology and evidence based practice of joint examination, diagnosis and treatment.

Facilitated by consultants in rheumatology and radiology, the course is intended for specialist registrars in rheumatology, primary care physicians such as general practitioners and sports physicians. This multi-speciality approach allows for in-depth discussion on treatment approaches in different types of patients. This course is highly rated and participants find the course useful as it provides them with confidence in managing soft tissue symptoms.

Healthcare Professionals within the specialist services clinical programme group also benefit from the regular multi-disciplinary team meetings in myositis and autoimmune peripheral neuropathies between rheumatologists and scientists (Dr Sonya Abraham, Peter Charles), histopathologists (Dr Fede Roncarolli) and neurologists.

This meeting involves the discussion of clinical cases presenting to the neurology or rheumatology physicians working in Imperial College Healthcare. It allows for review of the patient’s diagnosis with biopsy samples, discussion of management plans with immunomodulatory drugs and interspeciality education on pathophysiology of disease, interpretation in immunological blood tests and use of established immunomodualtory drugs and newer biologic agents.
