Trauma and orthopaedics

The orthopaedic department at Charing Cross Hospital is world-renowned for hip and knee replacement and orthoplastic trauma reconstruction.

The elective unit offers a comprehensive secondary and tertiary referral practice in adult hip and knee reconstruction.

There is emphasis on conservative and computer-assisted surgery with Charing Cross being a world-leading site in the development and exploitation of technology to improve outcomes in reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee. Upper limb and foot and ankle services are also provided on-site.

Elective surgery is carried out on a ring-fenced MRSA free pathway on a dedicated ward and in two ring-fenced laminar flow theatres.

Combined care is offered for the following:

  • Rheumatology department for different types of inflammatory arthritis
  • Haematology department for the treatment of sickle cell disease
  •  Oncology departments for the treatment of bone complications of malignancy

The trauma unit provides secondary trauma care for all injuries and tertiary care for pelvic and compound fractures from the surrounding hospitals. Complex injuries, including pelvic trauma, requiring combined plastic and orthopaedic surgery are referred in from further afield and abroad.
