Podiatric surgery is elective foot surgery performed on a day care basis allowing patients to recover at home.
The range of foot surgery is extensive, encompassing soft tissue lesions such as ganglions and neuroma; bone surgery such as an osteotomy and arthrodesis can be employed to correct bunion deformities, osteoarthritis of the big toe joints; more complex surgery can be undertaken to correct painful flatfoot conditions.
The scope, of podiatric surgery is the foot and its associated structures below the ankle. When necessary additional biomechanical assessment (including gait analysis) can be applied to the surgical solution to provide a functional foot following surgery, such as the provision of an orthotic device (prescribed insole).
To deliver the appropriate level of care a comprehensive assessment, examination and investigation of the patient is undertaken to provide a bespoke treatment plan.
The podiatric surgical team has systems of intra-disciplinary and multi-agency partnership within and outside of the local health community to ensure that the best possible service can be both commissioned and provided within the available resources. The team is always continuing to expand opportunities for the diversification of the service by improving accessibility for the local population. This is accomplished by working in collaboration with acute hospital services within Charing Cross Hospital therefore offering a holistic approach to the management of foot ailments.
The podiatric surgery team is an active participant in multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings within Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and other patient services teams such as:
