Pain management service

Charing Cross Hospital provides a comprehensive consultant-led pain management service for inpatients and outpatients.

The team of doctors and nurse specialists offer integrated care for the acute and chronic needs of patients who suffer ongoing pain.

The pain management centre is a dedicated purpose-built unit designed to provide not only the right environment but also the essential facilities necessary to establish optimum care. The team strongly upholds the NHS principles of dignity, respect and compassion when dealing with those suffering intractable pain.

Facilities include a four-bed day unit and a treatment suite with full imaging facilities enabling complex procedures to be performed and a series of pain management programmes to be held.

A range of medical services and treatments enables care to be provided in an individualised and holistic manner. Complementary therapies such as acupuncture are available and, through associations with our psychologists and physiotherapists, frequent pain programmes are run.

All types of chronic pain are assessed. The clinicians have particular interests in the management of musculoskeletal pain, neuropathic pain, nerve injury, including complex regional pain syndromes, and cancer pain.

The approach to care recognises that realistic reductions in the burden and disability of chronic pain can be achieved whilst acknowledging that curing chronic pain conditions can prove extremely difficult.
