The aim of the orthotic service is to facilitate the treatment and rehabilitation of the individual. This is achieved through assessment of need and provision of an orthosis that will remedy or relieve a medical condition or disability, and may prevent the development of more disabling conditions.
The service has a wide referral base, enjoying strong links with orthopedics, cancer, vascular surgery, rheumatology and diabetic departments. It includes multidisciplinary assessment and offers innovative approaches to management of patients with neurological conditions.
It also aims to offer a continuing programme of maintenance, repair and reassessment/review of need once an orthosis has been supplied. Orthotics may be ‘made to measure’ or ‘off the shelf’.
Clinics are held at Charing Cross and Hammersmith hospitals to treat and rehabilitate individuals through assessment of need and provision of an orthosis.
