Gender surgery

The gender reassignment unit, based at Charing Cross Hospital, provides a supra-regional service performing male-to-female gender reassignment surgery for patients throughout Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

More than 150 operations are undertaken each year and it is the largest European centre for such surgery. The service is entirely consultant-led with two consultant surgeons who offer continuous on-call cover for their patients, as well as a specialist surgical nurse.

The team has presented papers at international meetings about its work and both consultants regularly give lectures about their service both in Britain and abroad.
