The gastroenterology team provides clinics in general gastroenterology, colon cancer screening, inflammatory bowel disease and nutrition, and a specialist small bowel service with an interest in occult intestinal bleeding. Over 1,350 new patients and 2,750 follow ups are seen each year across ten clinics.
The endoscopy service carried out around 7000 procedures last year with specialist interests in luminal endoscopic therapy:
We utilise high definition endoscopy imaging systems including chromoendoscopy, narrow band imaging and autoflourescence to improve the detection of abnormalities and Scope Guide imaging and CO2 insufflation to reduce patient discomfort during and after colonoscopy procedures. The unit also carries out 200 capsule endoscopies per year.
The West London Bowel Cancer Screening programme is also based at Charing Cross and sees over 600 patients each year.
The specialist small bowel service has been established offering capsule endoscopy and balloon enteroscopy providing diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to small bowel disease.
The team also has an interest in nutritional support and tube feeding and provides enteral tube feeding support to the Royal Hospital for Neurodisability at Putney.
The inpatient service cares for general medicine and gastroenterology patients in south green ward and provides support for nutrition and specialist gastroenterology to other teams. Planned investigations that require a short inpatient stay come via the planned investigation unit on 8 south ward.
