Elderly medicine

The department of medicine for the elderly specializes in the care of frail older people with complex problems such as delirium, dementia, difficulty walking and falls. Inpatient services focus on acutely ill elderly people. The rehabilitation ward provides specialist rehabilitation planning for patients referred for rehabilitation. Outpatient services include general and specialist clinics, memory, falls and Parkinson’s which are run on site and in the community. 

Services are run at Charing Cross Hospital with a strong focus on comprehensive elderly assessment, multidisciplinary teamwork and discharge planning. We work closely with a range of other internal and external specialties and care agencies

Charing Cross Hospital has 40 acute beds, and 15 beds on the specialist rehabilitation assessment ward.

• Specialist multidisciplinary falls clinic in partnership with community falls intervention service
• Specialist memory clinic in partnership with old age psychiatry
• Medicine for the elderly outpatients clinic (comprehensive elderly assessment)
• Section 47 assessments 

Inpatients - acute, rehabilitation and liaison

• Acute consultant-led comprehensive elderly assessment service (OPAL service)
• Acute inpatient medicine for the elderly service
• Consultant-supervised inpatient rehabilitation service  
• Rehabilitation referrals service managing all referrals for rehabilitation
• General inpatient consultation service
• Acute consultant-led orthopaedic elderly medicine service
• Consultant-led old age psychiatry liaison service
• Consultant assessment and advice integrated care services for older people in community care homes, Farm Lane and St Vincents
