The intensive care unit (ICU) at Charing Cross has up to 27 beds and is subdivided into two wards.
There is a significant caseload of complex head and neck reconstructive surgery, vascular and plastic surgery, neurosurgery, neuro-trauma and neurology. In addition, services are provided for general medical and surgical patients from the surrounding community. The neuro-intensive care unit is one of the busiest neuro-trauma centres in London with up to ten dedicated level 3 beds.
The ICU overall performs at the very highest level with mortality rates considerably less (40 percent) than expected when case-mix adjusted and compared internationally. The unit uses strict innovative approaches to infection control, placing patient safety at the top of its agenda.
The consultant-based service is unique in the UK in that all consultants have no other commitments other than to critical care.
