The colorectal team provides treatment for a full range of colorectal conditions, benign and malignant, and use surgical and non-surgical treatments for the conditions. Many conditions need advice and simple medications or lifestyle changes and do not need surgery. For patients requiring surgery, the main focus is on minimally invasive surgery and enhanced recovery. Short stay surgery for many of the lower GI minimally invasive procedures is carried out in the Riverside wing.
Our main scientific research interest is in colorectal cancer, in collaboration with the Kennedy Institute. We are also developing research programs which look at the effectiveness and efficiency of treatments delivered to our patients, with the aim of improving the patients’ experience and their care.
For suspected colorectal cancer, we are developing a rapid access rectal bleed clinic and emergency access clinics and work closely with other teams within the Trust: gastroenterology, liver, pancreas and biliary surgery, medical oncology and upper GI surgery.
