Anaesthetics

The anaesthetic department is headed by 24 consultants who supervise a team of five senior clinical fellows and 20 trainees.

The department aims to provide the highest standard of evidence based, patient-centred care across the full range of surgical services provided at Charing Cross Hospital. This includes: major vascular surgery; head and neck surgery; neurosurgery; reconstructive plastic surgery; bariatric surgery; trauma and orthopaedic surgery. Anaesthetic care is provided to patients undergoing interventional radiological procedures and emergency care to severely injured patients in A&E.

The department maintains a rigorous programme of continuing professional development for all staff, and promotes active participation in audits. We run regular audit and clinical governance meetings as a department and in conjunction with the other anaesthetic departments in the Trust. Since the establishment of the academic health science centre, research has flourished within the department with projects focusing on improving the safety and quality of anaesthesia.

As part of the Imperial School of Anaesthesia, we provide unique training opportunities to junior anaesthetists and have an excellent record of success for those trainees sitting fellowship exams.
