The emergency department (A&E) at Charing Cross Hospital provides a comprehensive emergency service for its local catchment area in west London and a specialist emergency service, in particular stroke, for a wider catchment area.
The department is divided into three areas: critical care, assessment area and urgent care centre. Patients are streamed to these areas depending on their clinical needs.
The emergency department has both an emergency assessment unit and an emergency short stay ward. The emergency assessment unit is for patients requiring more than four hours to assess whether they need to be admitted.
The emergency short stay ward admits patients who require only up to 24-hours inpatient care. The short stay ward has a discharge team attached to it, comprising an occupational therapist, a physiotherapist and a discharge liaison nurse.
The urgent care centre is open 24 hours and is staffed by nurse practitioners, emergency nurse practitioners and GPs and sees patients presenting with minor illnesses and injuries, and those with primary care problems.
In addition, Charing Cross Hospital is now the Hyper Acute Receiving Unit for the whole of north west London.
