St Mary's Hospital private wing to close for £9m improvements - 10 August 2010

The Lindo wing at St Mary’s Hospital will undergo a £9m improvement programme to raise the bar even higher for its excellent quality of patient care.

Lindo Wing signThe programme of works to the private healthcare facility will include a complete internal reconfiguration and refurbishment, resulting in a state-of-the-art facility to treat both obstetric and general private patients.

All inpatient rooms in the new facility will have en-suite facilities, climate control and wi-fi.

In addition there will be a dedicated day unit and three operating theatres, all equipped with the latest technology.

The internationally renowned obstetric unit will have dedicated delivery and postnatal facilities, plus emergency theatre facilities as well as a nursery.

Head of private healthcare Charlie Clayton said: “The Lindo wing is perfect for treating both national and international private patients.

“But in order to provide the quality setting and cutting-edge facilities our patients expect, it is now in need of a total refurbishment.

“The extent of the work will mean a total closure of the facility for ten months, but we very much look forward to re-opening in October 2011.

The improvement work begins on October 1 this year, when the wing will close to general patients.

Maternity services will relocate internally within the existing building for a short period until November 19 when the building will close entirely.

A limited number of private maternity patients will continue to be admitted in dedicated private facilities in St Mary’s Hospital and will be cared for by the Lindo wing’s highly trained midwifery staff.

A restricted private outpatient service will also be maintained during the closure for general patients.

These arrangements will continue until the Lindo wing reopens in October next year.

All private income raised within Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is re-invested in the NHS for the benefit of all patients.
